If you’re not familiar with this common Business Concept 101, let me let you in on a little secret.

When you focus your efforts on truly identifying the narrow window of clientele who can most benefit from the specific services you provide, your business will begin to benefit from operating within your niche.  

Identifying your target market and operating within your niche will help you define your brand, position yourself as an authority within your industry and will help you get clear about who you serve and why.  Clients and perspectives will benefit from this clarity, as they will know whether or not you can satisfy their needs.

So how does one go about finding their niche?

Grab a pen and a notepad, and prepare to take notes.  I’m about to open your eyes to the specific steps you need to take in order to find–and thrive–within your niche.

  • Ask yourself: what problem does your product or service solve?  When you are able recognize and quantify the exact needs your products or services fulfill, you then gain clarity on who you should be targeting.
  • Identify who can most benefit from this product or service and how.  Once you’ve determined what problem you solve through your products or services, then figure out who can most directly benefit from what you provide.  If you teach yoga to handicapped individuals that are bedridden and restricted to wheelchairs, then perhaps your target clients will include elderly individuals in retirement homes, Special Olympics athletes and physical therapy patients.
  • Go where it’s warm: seek out your target audience members and where they congregate.  Once you’ve identified what it is you do and who it is you serve, your next move should be to formulate a marketing plan to target the enclaves and clusters of these individuals.  Where do they congregate? Where do they spend their time during weekdays? On the weekends? Go where it’s warm, and there you’ll find your clients.
